SMYAC History - 2014
Welcome to another outstanding season of Prince Frederick Eagle’s football !
Here is some basic information for both returning and new players.
Exciting new changes for the 2014 Season are as follows!
High-level Points of Upcoming Season Changes:
- League name change to reflect expansion.
- Partnership with another area league for improved Junior division opportunities.
- New weight rules for divisions aim to keep friends together.
- New team added to league.
Each item are explained in greater detail below.
The League - SMYAC:
The Calvert County Youth Football League is now known as the Southern Maryland Youth Athletic Conference (SMYAC).
The Prince Frederick Eagles will commit one SENIOR team to each age/weight division to compete in SMYAC play. Senior division teams will compete in a 10 game season schedule with 5 home games and 5 away games against other SMYAC Senior division teams.
The NEW AND IMPROVED Junior Division format will allow for our true developmental teams to compete against a combined schedule of opponents consisting of other junior level teams from both SMYAC and CCIFYL (Charles County youth league). In seasons past, the biggest complaint was that junior division teams were forced to play a modified schedule in a division consisting of as few as three opponents. Now your PFE football player will have the benefit of playing football against teams/players of like skilled competition while enjoying a full schedule of opponents all within the Southern Maryland community! Junior division teams will compete in a 10 game season schedule with 5 home games and 5 away games against SMYAC and CCIFYL junior division teams.
Our season runs from August to approximately November depending on whether a team qualifies for the SMYAC Classic (our playoffs). The top 4 teams in each weight division qualify for the SMYAC Classic. The following organizations participate in our youth football league:

Weight divisions may be split into Senior (formerly named A-teams) and Junior (formerly named B-teams).
Our weight classes are 7/70, 8/80, 9/90, 10/100, 11/110, 12/120, 14/135 and Unlimited.
Our regular season is typically 10 games, followed by playoffs (for those teams that qualify). Playoffs begin Mid-Late November extending for 2 weeks.
Team schedules will be made available approximately the 2nd week of practice. Most games are played on Saturdays. However, teams may play weekday evening games in the event of inclement weather. In the case of game cancelations, PFE will notify the respective teams about rescheduling. Note—no games will be scheduled during Labor Day weekend.
Players will be evaluated by Head Coaches and staff during the initial days of practice to determine placement on a Senior or Junior team. However, not all weight divisions may have both Senior and Junior teams; it is dependent on the number of registered players.
Practices will start on August 1st at Calvert Elementary. The first night of practice the entire organization will gather for a few minutes to discuss the upcoming season. Practices typically will run Monday thru Thursday from 6PM to 8PM. First night of practice will be held in shorts, T-shirts and cleats (tennis shoes for those that haven’t purchased cleats yet) only. Your respective coaches will provide further guidance on wearing equipment later in the week.
Starting appx. the 3rd week of September we will move our practices to Hallowing Point Park. Practice schedules will be determined prior to relocation to HPP.
If you did not receive equipment at the time of registration, we will have a limited supply of equipment available at Calvert Elementary during the first weeks of practice and at Hallowing Point Park on specified dates. Our equipment shed is located at the back of the park. As you enter the park, continue straight. You’ll come to a 4-way stop; continue straight again. Follow the winding road all the way to the back of the park. Note—Players must return all issued equipment at the end of the season. Failure to do so will result in PFE charging parents/guardians a replacement fee for each unreturned item.
What we issue the players:
Helmets—our helmets are either brand new or re-conditioned. Our equipment managers will fit your child for a proper size helmet. If you wish to purchase your own helmet, please contact a member of PFE so that we can ensure you have the proper equipment.
Shoulder pads—shoulder pads are fitted by our equipment managers or on staff coaches.
Practice pants—holds 7-piece pad sets. Players, unless otherwise instructed by coaches, will wear practice pants to all practices.
7-piece pad sets—contains hip pads, thigh pads, butt pad and knee pads. Used for both practice and game pants.
Basic mouth piece—we will provide each player a basic mouth piece.
Note—flag football players receive a jersey and flags as part of the registration fee.
What we ask our players to purchase:
Most local sports stores (Dicks, Modells) carry youth football equipment.
Game/practice jerseys--game and practice jerseys can be ordered through our spirit sales coordinator.
Game pants/socks--we will have these available for sale during the first weeks of practice.
Cleats (no metal spikes please)—we may have a limited amount of cleats for exchange. If you have unused cleats that may be too small, please bring them to practice to offer to those who may need them.
Athletic supporter—all players are required to wear an athletic supporter during contact drills, scrimmages and games. A soft cup is also suggested.
Optional equipment—visors (clear only), extra mouth piece, arm/wrist bands, chest/rib protectors.
Our first official weigh-in for Prince Frederick Eagles will typically take place during the second week of August. Second weigh-ins for those players that missed the initial weigh will be the following week. Dates and times are determined by the SMYAC. Players should ONLY wear t-shirts, shorts and tennis shoes to weigh-ins. It is required that every player (excluding flag football and Unlimited players) weigh-in in the presence of a Calvert County official—no exceptions. For obvious safety concerns, it is not advisable to place your child on restrictive diets or excessive training to lose (or maintain) weight. Throughout the course of the season, players are permitted 10lbs of added weight w/out the need to move to another weight class (known as the ‘blow up’ rule).
Your Head Coach will specify a time that he will want children at the game site prior to a game. Typically it is one hour prior to the start of your scheduled game. During this time, each coach is required to ensure children have proper equipment and provide player cards for the opposing coach. Warm-ups and pre-game activities also take place during this time. Please make every effort to respect the coaches and players by being on-time. Players should bring all football equipment with them.
Additionally this is your child’s time to shine!!! Please cheer your children on! Be loud, be proud! But above all be respectful.
All parents, players and coaches must sign personal conduct forms. We expect all concerned to act accordingly. If you cannot act in accordance w/our policy, you will be asked to leave the game/practice/event area immediately. If necessary we will contact law enforcement agencies.
We first and foremost wish to provide a safe and fun environment for your children. Secondly our intent is to teach and instruct young men and women the basic fundamentals of football. Lastly, we want to ensure good sportsmanship—regardless of winning or losing. At times we may lose perspective, but please do your best to conduct yourselves accordingly and act in adherence to our tenants. All of our coaches, team moms, elected and appointed board members are strictly volunteers; please respect our efforts.
Parent and player concerns and kudos:
If you have an issue that needs to be addressed or would like to give constructive or positive feedback, please speak w/your coach first. If that is not an option or does not resolve the issue, please see our PAC (Parent Advisory Committee) Chairperson, Mr. Robert Kimmel. His contact information can found under the “Contacts” tab. Mr. Kimmel will listen to all disputes and advise on a course of action. If the course of action is unacceptable to the parties involved he will bring the issue to the PFE Board. Please make every attempt to use this process if the need arises.
What can I do to help my child be a better player?
The most important aspect of being a parent or guardian of a player is to show your support each and every time they play or practice. A simple pat on the back and words of encouragement go a long way to help a child improve. Be supportive at all times!
I would like to volunteer as a coach; how can I help?
We are completely dependent on volunteers to maintain our organization. Are organization is only as good as our volunteers. If you would like to assist in anyway, please contact our Coordinators (Cheer – Theresa Brenner / Football – Chris Floria). Contact info located on the PFE website. We can always use a helping hand at practices, games and events. If you wish to participate as a coach, you must complete a background check form and complete an online course; NO EXCEPTIONS. See your coach if you have additional questions. Note—parents, friends and family members are NOT permitted on practice or game fields while practices or games are being held.
How do I find out if my game or practice has been canceled?
The Prince Frederick Eagles will notify parents via text or email of any cancelations. During the season we update the PFE Facebook page w/current information regarding practices, games and events. You can also visit our website and/or contact your respective coach.
